There were several times I found myself really getting swept up in the moment (and I recall this happening a lot my first go-around), but every time I did we'd get a lame attempt at comedy that would totally break the spell and spoil the mood.
That may not sound like a huge problem for a battle shounen, but Kimetsu compounds it by trying to be funny way too often.

I’m also noticing as I re-engage with the series that Zenitsu and Inosuke are actually more symptoms than the disease - that being that Kimetsu no Yaiba just isn’t very good at comedy.
The usual caveats apply - anything with Zenitsu and Inosuke was a chore, and there was way too much crying (again) - but on balance it worked. And it got off to a pretty good start, I have to say - I found this double-episode (how ufotable love their double-episode premieres) quite entertaining. But Kimetsu isn’t War and Peace or even Hunter X Hunter - its strengths lie in delivering the expected very well rather than in subverting expectations - so I kind of feel like I can extrapolate a lot of this out and come pretty close.Īnd with that, we have Yuukaku-hen. And I don’t know who I’m assumed to recognize and who’s a new character. Mugen Ressha-hen helped, but there are still blank spots - like, I have no idea how Muzan (yay that he’s back, BTW) ended up in a little boy’s body. I continue to be in sort of a weird place myself, with a fairly lengthy gap in my own timeline with the series which I just haven't had the time (and to an extent the inclination, if I'm honest) to fill in. This is a franchise that’s re-invented a lot of things where anime and manga are concerned - on the commercial side, that is, not the creative - so there’s no reason for it to feel bound by those precedents. Is it a “First Impression” when it happens in the middle of an anime season,Ĭoming on the heels of another episode of the same series? Kimetsu no Yaiba has pretty well discarded the usual precedents of anime broadcast with this weird return to the airwaves, but I guess that’s fitting. I can say with conviction that this series intrigues you with every episode watched, leaving a great cliffhanger at the end you will certainly think enthusiastically about what is to come and you will want to watch the other episodes further, so curiosity triggers you, I have no doubt. Kimetsu no Yaiba: Yuukaku-hen pleasantly surprised me and aroused my great interest from the first episode due to the story with a great emotional and of course impact of the characters. Beware this review may contain SMALL SPOILERS. Even though so much of this show is obviously so amazing, I can't misrepresent how awful that one element is. Others 5, 2 - I feel like if an element of the show is so horrible that it's a contender for the worse in all of history, that should have a disproportionate impact on the overall show. Some villains are pretty cool again as well. Tanjuro being the exception of course for the most part. Never really blown away by anything though.Ĭharacter 2 - Dialogue of every character is again the literal worst in anything I've ever seen. Sound 8 - I do feel the feels when Tanjuro is having his moments and sound is a big part of that.
Other allies like budget gotei 13 are pretty lame, but it's fine. Tanjuro, Nezuko and some enemy designs are also pretty cool. Not even the worst wuxia or throwaway isekai is worse than thisĪrt 10 - ufotable being ufotable. Anything involving talking that doesn't involve Tanjuro is literally the worst thing I can remember from any medium. The main villain aka Michael Jackson and the tattoo guy that killed 12 year old with no experience in drawing's first OC kinda suck, but everyone else have been pretty cool. The plot (which again is amazing) serves his development and all we need to know about him so the idiot author doesn't need to shove it into the a random scene. Tanjuro, the MC, is the exception to this in that even though he is a trope, he's done really well. In most scenes if the characters on screen literally stopped in the middle of their fight and looked at the camera to give deadpanned exposition, it would be better than this.

It's either completely out of place exposition that I guess the author was too stupid to figure out how to say naturally or annoying tropes screeching the trope 2 lines. But any time anyone opens their mouth it's the stupidest thing I've ever heard in any medium.
